Despite the millions of visitors to Acadia National Park each year, one can escape the crowds with relative ease. About a 30-minute drive west of Bar Harbor, the 'quiet side' of Mount Desert Island contains about a third of Acadia's land, with far fewer visitors.

Your home base will be the small seaside town of Southwest Harbor, where you will find cozy cafés, creative shops, and friendly locals.
