The Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, made a significant impact on the development of trails and other infrastructure of many national parks, including the Smokies. In the south central region of the park you can walk among the remains of the old CCC camps and envision their daily lives.
Compass & Key recommends starting this hike after an early-morning visit to nearby Clingmans Dome. Bring a picnic lunch or snacks to enjoy by the Kephart Prong shelter before returning to the trailhead.
