TEMPLES, MARKETS, AND THE CENTER OF POLITICS
The Roman Forum was the heart of the city during the Republic (509 BC - 27 BC) and continued for hundreds of years. The wealthy and powerful Romans of the day resided above the Forum on Palatine Hill, where legend says that Romulus and Remus founded the city in 753 BC.
This itinerary allows plenty of time to explore this incredible collection of ancient artifacts. While you could certainly walk this route in less time, the Forum and Palatine Hill easily fill a day of exploration. Beat the crowds by arriving at 8:30 am when The Forum opens and bring a picnic lunch to eat at Farnese Gardens. Purchase 48-hour tickets in advance that include The Forum, Palatine Hill, the Colosseum, and its arena. Plan on following this itinerary the first day, and visiting the Colosseum on the second day as part of our itinerary Roman Daily Life.
